Emergency glass repair

Broken glass right now?

Don't wait until morning. Emergency calls are answered 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Until we get there

  1. Keep everyone back. Move people and pets away from the opening and any loose glass.
  2. Leave the pieces in the frame. Pulling out broken glass by hand is an easy way to get cut.
  3. Take a few photos. Note the rough size too. It speeds up the quote and helps with an insurance claim.

Which glass goes where

Building codes require safety glass in doors, showers and other spots where someone could fall into it. Here is how the main types differ.

One sheet if it breaks Small, blunt pieces

Tempered glass

Heat-treated to be about four times stronger than standard glass. If it does break, it crumbles into small, blunt pieces instead of sharp shards.

Where it goesDoors, shower enclosures, storefronts, railings and tabletops.

Three layers if it breaks Cracks, stays in place

Laminated glass

Two sheets of glass bonded to a clear plastic layer. When it cracks, the pieces stay stuck to that layer, so the opening stays covered.

Where it goesStorefronts, skylights, railings and anywhere security or noise matters.

Sealed gap if the seal fails Fog between the panes

Insulated glass

Two panes sealed around a spacer, with air or gas in between. It holds heat in through winter and keeps it out in summer.

Where it goesDouble-pane windows, patio doors and skylights.

Plastic sheet if it gets hit Flexes, hard to break

Plexiglass & Lexan

Clear plastic sheets that weigh less than glass. Plexiglass (acrylic) resists scratches better. Lexan (polycarbonate) takes harder hits.

Where it goesProtective barriers, display cases, sheds and high-impact spots.

TEMPERED SAFETY GLASS ANSI Z97.1 16 CFR 1201 II

Not sure what you have? Look in the corners. Tempered glass carries a small etched stamp like this one. Glaziers call it the bug.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Call and ask. It's faster than guessing.

Call (202) 322-0820
Do you offer emergency glass repair at night or on weekends?

Yes. Emergency calls are answered 24/7. Call (202) 322-0820, tell us what broke and where you are, and we'll tell you how soon we can be there.

What areas do you serve?

We serve Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. Our base is 229B Upshur St NW, Washington, DC 20011. If you're not sure we cover your address, call and ask.

Can you replace just the glass, or do I need a whole new window?

Usually just the glass. If the frame and hardware are in good shape, we replace the pane or the double-pane unit and keep the rest. In most cases that costs less than a full window replacement.

Why is my double-pane window foggy?

The seal around the glass unit has failed, so moist air is getting between the panes. You can't wipe it off because it's on the inside. The fix is a new insulated glass unit, which also brings back the insulation.

What is the difference between tempered and laminated glass?

Tempered glass is heat-treated. It is about four times stronger than standard glass and breaks into small, blunt pieces. Laminated glass is two sheets bonded to a plastic layer, so it cracks but stays in one piece. Both count as safety glass.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Tell us what the glass is part of, such as a window, door, storefront or shower. Add rough measurements and a photo if you can. Your address or ZIP helps too. Send it through the form or call.

Do you cut glass to custom sizes?

Yes. We cut and install custom glass, including tabletops, mirrors and panes in sizes you won't find on a shelf. Give us the measurements, or ask us to measure for you.

Do you work on both homes and businesses?

Yes. We handle residential and commercial glass, from a single window pane to storefronts, glass doors, partitions and railings.
